DRIVE OF THE WINNERS

Mayo Competitors Win HASS Drive of the Day Award in Cavan
Ambrose Gaughan and Derek Molloy from Co. Mayo claimed the HASS Border Championship Drive of the Day award on Sunday's Cavan Stages Rally. The Toyota Corolla crew won their prize by being the fastest competitors in class 9 on special stage 4 to complete the rally.
Class 9 has proved to be a very competitive category this year, and competition was expected to be intense for the honour of setting fastest time on stage 4. In the event it was the Mini of Wicklow's Lloyd Hutchinson and Kevin Flanagan who provided the benchmark time ahead of Gaughan and Molloy's Corolla. However the rules require competitors to finish the rally in order to claim the HASS Drive of the Day Award, and with the Mini crew retiring with engine failure on the penultimate stage, this opened the door for Gaughan and Molloy. The Mayo pairing duly steered their car home safely back to rally headquarters the Hotel Kilmore to win the sought after award as well as taking class victory on the rally.
Ambrose Gaughan and Derek Molloy join Camillus Bradley and Crawford Henderson from Derry, and David Smith and Austin Hamill from Monaghan as winners of HASS Drive of the Day Awards in 2010. The next award will be presented at round 4 of the Border Championship, the Mourne Rally this week-end.
